Since the vast majority of shooters are male...

...and the ACLU would probably fight any effort to pass laws prohibiting the males of our species in any way, shape, or form having firearms, access to firearms, or the physical capability of using firearms, I say we should just ban men and skip right to parthenogenesis. I'm not so impressed with the latest variations made possibility by sexual reproduction anyway, so let's just skip the XY input and male reproductive participation.

Well, okay, so maybe a sport male now and then.

Reuben, Reuben, I've been thinking
What a strange world this would be
If the men were all transported
Far beyond the northern sea.

Reuben, Reuben, I've been thinking

Life would be so easy then
What a lovely world this would be
If there were no tiresome men.

I'm having a hard time seeing the downside to this...

1. Who is this Reuben Guy? Why did they name a sandwich after him?

2. Does parthenogenesis pass the acid tests? Let's see ...
What would Muhammad say? Answer: Jihad, Jihad! (much jumping up and down, arm flapping, strapping on of explosives, gutteral simian threats).
What is the Pope's take? Answer: "I was only quoting someone else. I have the highest respect for parthenogenesis."
What would Pat Robertson think? Answer: Pat Robertson can think?

3. (Unrelated matter) Want a great chuckle? Go to the Aug/Sept 2006 issue of Free Inquiry magazine. On page 57 is an article entitled The Loch Ness Nipple by Katrina Voss.

I don't know about the Voss article, but I did find Phil Zuckerman's Sects and Violence: Is Faith Good for Us? to be very interesting. Kind of confirms my belief that all religious fundamentalism is dangerous to humans and other living things...

Hi, Melissa. I love your work on turtles and tortoises. Since I couldn't find another place to comment about sexing sulcatas, I'll mention it here.

The best way to reliably sex these tortoises is the shape of the spikes on the underside of the body below the tail. The space between the spikes on a male is a sharp v-shape. On a female, it is larger altogether, and more of a u-shape (related to egg-laying). Also, my male sulcata often displays his penis when I soak him in warm water.

Why so much hate for men? Yes, they have some very aggressive behavior, but so do sulcatas and many other creatures. Maybe we could look at this aggressiveness in humans the same way we view it so compassionately in animals, as a part of the genetic makeup that encourages survival that in the case of humans has become distorted.

How about seeing it again with compassion, and feel sorrow that these men were not treated well when growing up, given bad role models, or that they live in a society that promotes values inconsistant with peace. I am not absolving them of responsibility, but perhaps it is not right to meet hate with more hate.

I feel that a broad hatred of men is no different than a broad hatred of black people, lesbians and gays, old people, handicapped people, etc. I am sure that if you wanted to research, you would find examples of violent women, violent lesbian, violent blacks, and so on. We are ALL children of Cain.

Please don't perpetuate hate.
